1930s: The Saddlebag That Started It All
Originally introduced as the Sac à Dépêches in the 1930s, the bag was designed by Robert Dumas, a member of the Hermès family, to carry riding gear. It had a clean, trapezoidal silhouette with a flap closure, single handle, and side straps — a structure that would remain nearly untouched over the next century.
Its roots in equestrian culture are no coincidence: Hermès began as a harness and bridle workshop in 1837. The Sac à Dépêches was merely a nod to the brand’s legacy — refined, functional, and discreet.
1956: Grace Kelly Makes It a Legend
The turning point came in 1956. Princess Grace of Monaco, then one of the world’s most photographed women, was spotted shielding her baby bump with her beloved Sac à Dépêches in a Life magazine photo. Instantly, the bag became a symbol of elegance and discretion — and was dubbed the “Kelly bag” by the public.
In 1977, Hermès made it official: the Kelly was born.
